Exhibition Statement
Metals/Jewelry BFA
October/November 2018
This exhibition mourns the death and destruction caused by our vanities, empathizes with those marginalized, archives the healing process of wounds and the inner turmoil, and celebrates this short life. The ability to grow by questioning and finding purpose in each of our actions is beautifully human. I construct reliquaries that venerate the remnants of life both plant and animal. Closely observe the material choices as they serve symbolic meanings like glass and it's intrinsic fragility. Through jewelry, I can interact with the wearer in a very physical way and develop a level of intimacy and empathy as the object is so closely tied with the body. But, our pleasures of the physical world are ephemeral and futile, while relationships with others and the planet have lasting effects. We are at an constant crossroad of choices as there are ramifications to our actions beyond our own lives. I look at the conscious efforts of making educated choices and sacrificing pleasures to make a less destructive impact on our world.
