Drifting

Installation at Long Beach Airport
Steel, Driftwood, Concrete|20"x20"x6'|March 2019

Plaque reads:

Drifting encourages the exploration of new paths and places using driftwood as a symbol among a swoop of steel from earth to sky. Seemingly frozen in an ongoing journey, the driftwood emphasizes the importance of being in the present, remembering the past, and being open to new paths. The materials recall Long Beach's industrious history and its rich, natural environments while highlighting concepts of travel and adventure. Modern minimalistic forms of industrious steel and concrete contrast with the warms of the natural form of the encapsulated wood. The driftwood is positioned at eye level to attract interaction and the sympathy of travelers as the steel forms guide the eye upward, like the airplanes taking flight beyond the artwork.
